Cat Behaviour Consultants are a little like detectives, unravelling the mysteries of feline behaviour. They observe and analyse a cat's actions to identify potential origins of behaviour concerns such as aggression, litter box problems, or excessive meowing. Once the problem is pinpointed, they collaborate with cat owners to develop personalised behaviour modification plans, which may involve changes in the cat's environment, positive reinforcement training, or other strategies.

Additionally, they serve as educators, enlightening cat owners about cat body language, communication, and how to meet their cats' physical and emotional needs. By addressing and resolving behaviour concerns, consultants reduce stress for both the cat and the owner, ultimately strengthening the bond between them and ensuring a happier and healthier life for both.

Cat Behaviour Consultants tackle a variety of behaviours and situations, each with its unique nuances. Some common concerns they address include:

  •  Aggression: Cats may exhibit aggression towards other cats, animals, humans, or even themselves, causing concern for their owners.
  •  House Soiling: Inappropriate elimination, or litter box issues, can be a frustrating challenge for cat owners.
  •  Excessive Vocalising: While some cats are naturally more vocal, incessant meowing or yowling can be a sign of an underlying issue.
  •  Fear and Anxiety: Shy or anxious cats may exhibit destructive behaviour(s) such as overgrooming or pica (eating inorganic materials), or reduce daily maintenance behaviours such as eating or playing.
  •  Destructive Scratching: Cats' natural instinct to scratch can lead to furniture damage if not addressed appropriately.
  •  Introduction of New Pets: Bringing a new cat or another pet into the household can lead to problems if not managed correctly.
  • Moving house - Cats generally don’t cope well with change, and this includes moving from one place to another. Having professional guidance can be a big help during this process.

Because just about anyone can ‘call’ themselves a cat therapist, behaviourist, behaviour consultant or technician (due to lack of regulation) etc and can advertise as such, I would look over the following specifics of a prospective feline behaviour professional:

  •  A sound academic background with accredited providers in feline behaviour and/or applied animal behaviour e.g. ISFM.
  •  Practical experience with a variety of cases and behaviour concerns i.e. Outside of their own cats.
  •  Registration and certification with appropriate governing bodies e.g. IAABC and PPG.
  •  Continued education as there is always new information emerging in the field of behavioural science.
  • Feedback and reviews from previous clients. Google reviews are a good place to look.
  • Fear Free and low-stress handling and behaviour modification methods i.e. no water spray bottles or excessive restraint

Cat behaviour consultants play a vital role in improving the lives of cats and their owners. Here's how they make a positive impact:

  • Happy, Healthy Cats: By addressing behaviour red flags, consultants ensure that cats are mentally and emotionally healthy. A happy cat is a healthy cat!
  • Stress Reduction: Behaviour modifications and environmental optimization can significantly reduce stress in both cat and owner, leading to a more peaceful coexistence. This also applies to multi-pet households.
  • Stronger Bond: Consultants help strengthen the bond between cats and their owners by enhancing understanding of feline behaviour, fostering a more loving relationship.
  • Avoidance of Surrender: Many cats end up in shelters due to behaviour issues. Cat Behaviour Consultants can help prevent this, allowing cats to remain in their loving homes.
  • Empowered Owners: Consultants educate cat owners, enabling them to provide the best care and environment for their feline friends.

in my humble opinion, Cat Behaviour Consultants are the unsung heroes ofthe feline world, offering invaluable support to cat owners, veterinary teams, and shelter staff dealing with behaviour concerns. Their expertise and compassion transform the lives of countless cats and their human companions, creating a happier, healthier life for both.
